Our service activities had quelled over the past few years and this year we sought to change that. While our chapter is in the process of restructuring we agreed that this year would be the perfect one to increase our service involvement on campus and in our community. As we continue to gain momentum we look forward to adding more service events to our calendar.
Turkey Palooza (November 18th – 22nd, 2013)
For this event we assisted Campus Dining with their Turkey Palooza event, which collected food for needy families during the holiday season, by holding a drive to receive food donations which were given to Campus Dining to add to their contribution for the event. Despite our less than stellar bank balances, or members were very generous and brought what they could for the event. We were really proud of them.

Pitt County Animal Shelter
This was probably not our most glamorous service event, for we picked up behind the loving animals at the Pitt County Animal Shelter, but we did learn the value of a hard day’s work. Our service enabled the staff at the shelter to direct their attention to more pressing needs because it freed up time they would have been spending doing menial tasks. Our volunteers made light of the task at hand and one even brought bagels for the group.

Ronald McDonald House (February 21st, 2014)
Cooking for the families at the Ronald McDonald House was a truly rewarding experience. Our volunteers received great feedback for their spaghetti with a hearty meat sauce. Those that were able to attend this event reflected on how much they enjoyed it because they were able to see the direct impact of their work and interact with the people that they were helping. We really look forward to expanding our relationship with the Ronald McDonald House and seek to build a strong partnership between them and our SAM chapter.

Clothing Drive (April 7th – April 21st, 2014)
We are currently planning for our clothing drive which will take place next month. For this drive we will be collection clothing of all types to donate to agencies in the area. This will take the place of the yard sale that we typically host in the spring. We figured that this time instead of selling our items why not give them away to those who need them? So far our members have come up with some very creative ideas on how to market and collect clothes for our event. Our goal for this event is to help others and to give our chapter of SAM a definitive campus event that we can continue to host for years to come.
